Skincare I don’t currently use: (1) toner, (2) eye cream, and (3) exfoliating scrubs on my face. 

Why not? 

Toner: I’ve found so many toners to be drying, especially if they are made with drying alcohols (I’ll share a swipe up in my stories to help you guys determine whether alcohols on your ingredient list are safe for skin). I tend to keep my skincare routine somewhat minimalist and I’ve never found a toner to be a must-have for my skin. 

Eye cream: This one surprises a lot of people. I have sensitive skin and my skin often reacts to eye creams, even if they are supposed to be formulated for sensitive skin. Many clean eye creams contain essential oils, and the skin around our eyelids is very sensitive to some of the allergenic ingredients found in these blends. I do apply my vitamin c serum, my retinol, and my hydrating moisturizer on my upper cheeks knowing some will diffuse to the delicate skin around my eyes. 

Exfoliating scrubs: This one, I talk about all the time. I absolutely use a chemical exfoliant several times a week. Even water is a chemical, so don’t be afraid of that word!  Chemical exfoliants means it has glycolic acid, or lactic acid rather than relying on particles to scrub away dead skin.  Manual scrubs that feel gritty are NOT my pick for a healthy skin barrier.

I’m making banana chocolate mousse tonight. This easy, quick recipe is one of my favorites from The Beauty of Dirty Skin. I love making the avocado mousse too. I have such a sweet tooth, and this is just what my body and skin are craving without using refined sugars that will shift my microbiome in the wrong direction. 

What you need: 

1 peeled banana, frozen
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
Splash of unsweetened almond or coconut milk
1 tablespoon collagen protein powder or plant based protein
1 tablespoon honey or a pinch of stevia (optional)

To make: 
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
I like to chill it in the fridge for 30 minutes to thicken before serving.
